Communicating and Engaging in the Digital Era
January 6-8, 2020 | Long Branch, NJ

EdgeCon2020 was hosted by Edge, NJBDA member and the region’s nonprofit technology partner. EdgeCon2020 attendees gained insights, inspiration, and practical skills about relevant topics including: Big Data & Analytics, Cloud Technology, Cybersecurity, Education Technology, Enterprise Design and Integration, and User Experience Innovations. This year’s event featured  Eric Qualman, #1 Bestselling Author who provided an understanding of how to creatively tackle the challenges of engagement and communication in the digital era.

2019 New Jersey Big Data Alliance Research Collaboration Workshop

The New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA) Research Collaboration Forum, hosted by Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute, convened  close to 60 New Jersey researchers representing 18 institutions including industry, academia, and government. The event highlighted the NJBDA Research Committee mission, NJ Research collaboration tools, and some specific data sets followed by individual group discussion focused on NJ research collaboration opportunities.

One of the outcomes of the event was a multi- institutional research collaboration for the NSF Data Science Corp project proposal led by Rowan University.

New Opportunities and Strategies for Digital Transformation in Education and the Public Sector
January 9 – 11, 2019 | Long Branch, NJ

NJBDA was a proud sponsor of NJEdgeCon 2019 organized by NJBDA member NJEdge. The conference focused on digital transformation for today’s education, government, and healthcare institutions, covering an array of topics from developing an achievable and progressive digital strategy to driving its practical implementation. The internationally acclaimed and award-winning Innovation Strategist and Futurist, Shivvy Jervis, provided the keynote address and four exceptional digital leaders shared their domain-specific vision and real-world experiences for achieving digital transformation, including  Dr. Beth Simone Noveck – Chief Innovation Officer, State of New Jersey and Major General Patricia.

2018 Research Collaboration Workshop at Rutgers University  

The Research Committee of the New Jersey Big Data Alliance convened its first Research Collaboration Workshop on December 7, 2018 at Rutgers University.  At the workshop attendees shared information about Big Data research opportunities in areas such as data ethics, cybersecurity, AI, and machine learning.  The group also discussed pursuing funding to support identified  projects.   Information was also shared about unique data sets available to New Jersey researchers.

Data Science Workforce Forum at Rider University

Building Effective Talent Partnerships: Industry and Academia.  This event, held on November 14, 2018, was a highly interactive discussion between industry professionals, HR managers, and academic leaders focused on how to effectively create strategies, programs and pipelines for connecting advanced computing talent (data analysts, programmers, etc.) with local employers.

Artificial Intelligence and the Law Conference at Seton Hall

​Scholars, legal practitioners, and policymakers have begun to consider pressing issues raised by artificial intelligence technologies. Traditional regulatory frameworks are a poor match for a world of ubiquitous data collection, “smart” environments, and automation at scale. Seton Hall University, an NJBDA member, hosted a conference on April 19-20, 2018 which brought together technologically-literate lawyers, policymakers, advocates, and academics across disciplines and sectors to discuss possible solutions grounded in law, administrative policy, or organizational practice.  

Princeton University – Gilbert Public Lecture: Microsoft’s Brad Smith on the Rise of Artificial Intelligence: Who Will Have Jobs in the Future?

On March 1, 2018, Princeton University hosted Microsoft President Brad Smith to speak about  the future of artificial intelligence and what it could mean for business, the workforce and society.

Digital Leadership & Enterprise Transformation
January 11 & 12, 2018 | Whippany, NJ

This event featured internationally-recognized digital economy leader, Amber Mac, as the Keynote Speaker. The two-day conference included discussions and demonstrations to enhance learning about modern-day educational and instructional technology solutions, cybersecurity, big data analytics and digital transformation. The conference agenda included action-packed, interactive sessions relevant to decision makers, educators, IT specialists and librarians from NJEdge’s membership.

Digital Transformation and Cyber Resiliency CIO Conference

NJBDA was a proud supporter of this program held on October 4th, 2017 at NJTC, which focused on how companies are leading digital transformation and digitization efforts across the enterprise. The event addressed the changing role of the CIO and how successful organization’s are able to transform, protect data and ultimately accelerate business growth. Featured speakers included the CIO of BMS (Bristol Myers Squibb) and Comcast’s top executive, focusing on resiliency and business continuity. Attendance at this event was for non-vendor CEOs, CFOs CIOs, CTOs, IT Directors, Senior IT executives, IT Managers, and sponsors/exhibitors.

Big Data Workshop (Sponsored by NJIT & NJEdge)

The NJBDA Big Data Workshop held on January 4, 2017 at NJIT covered the essential introductory aspects of Apache Spark within the Hadoop 2 ecosystem. After completing the workshop attendees gained an understanding Spark’s value proposition and acquired hands-on experience with basic Spark operation (primarily PySpark) and the Zeppelin graphical web interface for Spark.

8th Annual Symposium
Princeton University

The 8th Annual NJBDA symposium took place on April 29 and 30, 2021 virtually, hosted by Princeton University. The theme of the event was: Smart State: Big Data for Community Impact. Keynote speakers included Stephen Goldsmith, Derek Bok Professor of the Practice of Urban Policy, Harvard Kennedy School and Tara Dawson McGuinness, Fellow and Senior Adviser of the New Practice Lab, New America. The symposium also included panel discussions for municipal practitioners and academic researchers, workshops, and cutting-edge research presentations on topics such as smart cities, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and more. 7th Annual Symposium
Kean University

The 7th Annual NJBDA symposium took place on November 13, 2020 virtually, hosted by Kean University. The event delved into the complex ethical issues surrounding data and public health in combating the Covid-19 pandemic. Keynote speakers included Carmel Shachar, JD, MPH, Executive Director, Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School and Dr. Elissa M. 6th Annual Symposium
New Jersey City University, Jersey City, NJ

The 6th Annual NJBDA symposium, took place on April 5, 2019 at New Jersey City University. The theme of the event was The Future of Big Data: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The symposium focused on the impact and potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning to transform business operations and drive new innovations and discoveries.  Keynote speakers included Dr. Manish Parashar, Director, Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, National Science Foundation and Dr. Chris White, Leader, Algorithms, Analytics, Augmented Intelligence, Nokia Bell Labs.  The symposium also included cutting-edge research presentations on topics such as Deep Learning systems, data-driven behavior, improving search tools, competitive strategy frameworks, and more.

5th Annual Symposium
The College of New Jersey, Trenton, NJ

The 5th Annual NJBDA symposium and 1st Statewide Data Science Career Fair, “Big Data: Transforming Tomorrow’s Workplace,” took place on April 30, 2018 at The College of New Jersey.

The impact and potential of big data in transforming business operations and employee roles was explored!  State and academic resources designed to build New Jersey’s talent pipeline in the digital age was discussed, as well as discovering best practices for leveraging advanced computing technologies and big data skills as a competitive advantage.

New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ

The 4th Annual NJBDA symposium, “Big Data Connects,” took place on March 16, 2017 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Big Data Connects delved into the ways in which Big Data has become integral across numerous sectors, and how it is transforming day-to-day life.

Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ

The 3rd Annual NJBDA symposium, “Big Data and Innovation,” took place at Montclair State University on March 9, 2016.

The symposium featured Andrew AJ Bubb, the US lead for Accenture’s Emerging Technology Wearables and Industrial Internet of Things Practices, and featured panels examining:

2nd Annual Symposium
Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ

The 2nd Annual NJBDA Symposium took place at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ on April 29th, 2015.

The symposium, titled “Big Data and the Transformation of Society,” featured Raymond Blum, International Man of Mystery at Google, and highlighted ways in which Big Data is revolutionizing the transportation and healthcare sectors, as well as its implications for privacy and its impact on the New Jersey workforce.

Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ

The 1st Annual NJBDA Symposium titled, “Partnerships in Big Data: Pathways to Transformative Innovation in NJ,” took place at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ on April 23rd, 2014.

The symposium was used to broaden statewide awareness of the NJBDA and provided a forum for policy makers and individuals from New Jersey industry and academia to learn more about the challenges and opportunities associated with “Big Data.”
